This German WW1 trench fighting mace flail was used during trench raids. The mace has a heavy cast iron spiked ball, attached by a chain to the wooden handle.
Trench raids were small scale surprise assaults on enemy trenches, which usually took place in the night. Although they had pistols and rifles, the attackers needed to be quiet so that they didn't alert the enemy further along the trench. This mace, as well as clubs and knives, were used for this reason.
Good condition, but some wear to the wooden handle.
The width of the handle is 36 cm, the width of the whole mace is 70 cm.
